After the Japanese invasion of China, life becomes unbearable for the people. Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen), a young man from the countryside, moves to bustling Shanghai with his younger sister, Guo Xi, to make a living. In Shanghai, Chen Zhen becomes a rickshaw driver, while Guo Xi starts working as a nurse at a hospital. Chen Zhen encounters a Japanese girl named Yumi Takeda (Kelly Wen) who works as a nurse at the same hospital as Guo Xi. The two fall in love. Chen Zhen, who has a passion for martial arts, often practices martial arts moves from a book in his spare time. One day, his skills are noticed by the leader of a local gang, Cai Liujin, who recruits him as a fighter. Chen Zhen quickly rises to become the top fighter in the gang. Guo Xi, constantly worried about her brother, believes that being involved with the underworld will lead to a bad outcome. Tragically, Guo Xi is killed by bandits, which prompts Chen Zhen to rethink his lifestyle. Devastated by his sister's death, Chen Zhen renounces his gang involvement. Huo Yuanjia, the leader of the Jingwu School, recognizes Chen Zhen's potential in martial arts and decides to mentor him. Under Huo Yuanjia's guidance, Chen Zhen's martial arts skills rapidly improve, and he ultimately avenges his sister's death. Grateful to Huo Yuanjia, Chen Zhen joins the Jingwu School. At this time, Yumi's Japanese fiance arrives in Shanghai and upon learning about Yumi's involvement with Chen Zhen, he decides to confront Chen...
