Lui Chung-yin is a Hong Kong artist who graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He joined Asia Television (ATV) early in his career, appearing in his first TV drama "The Cello and The Eighth (Gangster's Elegy)", and went on to act in over ten series including "Winner's King" and "King of Drama", before transitioning to TVB.
He has appeared in numerous works at TVB, with notable roles in "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" as Linghu Chong, as well as in dramas like "Island Special Forces", and "Part-time Policeman", among others. In recent years, he has reduced his acting appearances. Apart from TV works, he has also starred in movies. Lui graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1989 and signed with manager Chan Tsz-keung that same year. His debut film "Boxing King" earned him a nomination for Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
In 1990, he signed with ATV and during the 4-year contract period, he starred in hit TV dramas like "God of Gun", "Winner's King", "Silver Fox", and "King of Drama", becoming ATV's leading male star with co-stars Tony Leung, Maggie Ng, and Flora Chan, collectively known as ATV's "duo leading couple", creating the glory of ATV in the early 1990s.
In 1994, he terminated his contract with ATV and joined TVB. In his 6 years at TVB, Chung-yin quickly established himself with various roles in dramas like "Forgetful Lord", "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer", "Island Special Forces", and "Part-time Policeman" that significantly differed from his roles during his ATV period. Particularly, his portrayal of Linghu Chong in "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" was acknowledged as having a perfect blend of appearance and spirit closest to the original character. This role earned Chung-yin numerous fans and propelled his career to new heights.
In 2000, he left TVB. In the following years, he appeared in multiple films and Taiwanese TV dramas like "Love on Chief Executive" and "Young Shih Yan-wen". In 2001, he starred in the ATV-produced drama "Shen Xin", receiving positive reviews.
In January 10, 2009, Hong Kong actor Lui Chung-yin admitted in his blog that he had converted to Buddhism and had maintained a vegetarian diet for over a decade. In his blog post, he mentioned that he initially adopted a vegetarian diet for health reasons but later gained wisdom from Buddhist teachings, inspiring him to become a true Buddhist disciple. Prior to this admission, he refrained from revealing that the primary reason for his vegetarian diet was due to his Buddhist beliefs, stating, "I gained wisdom from Buddhist scriptures, not just a little wisdom, but also a compassionate heart. I no longer bear to kill other lives to satisfy my own desires!"
After 2002, he focused on the mainland Chinese market. Currently signed with Beijing Purple Crystal Spring Economic Company, he has filmed the upcoming movie "Eastern Casablanca", which we eagerly await!
In 2008, he ended his 14-year relationship with girlfriend Mak King-ting and tied the knot.
