Original name Su Shumei, born in Shunde, Guangdong, she studied at Guangzhou Daming Middle School, Guangzhou Accounting College, and Santa Rosa College. In her spare time, she studied acting with the red-line female artists, most often collaboratively performed with Yujia, creating a big show under the class label of 'Qing Hong Jia'. She also followed the red-line female to participate in film shooting. At the age of 16, she joined a professional Cantonese opera troupe as a lead actress. Starting from 1951, she participated in Cantonese film shootings. In 1956, she became an actress at Guangyi Film Company, where many people respectfully called her "Mei Jie". Very studious, as a red talent, she even took the Hong Kong secondary school examinations in the 1980s and chose to take the English subject, which became a popular topic. By 1985, she had participated in the shooting of nearly 200 Cantonese films, with the iconic work being 'Tangshan Ah Sao'. Her major works include 'Seven Layers of Heaven', 'Coconut Grove Moon', 'Camellia Rouge', 'Family Love and Tears', 'Purple Stormy Night', 'The 72 Tenants of Prosperity' and more. In 1960, she acted with Xie Xian in 'The Return of the Condor Heroes', with Xie Xian playing Yang Guo and she playing Xiaolongnü. Later, she married the well-known director and actor Chu Yuan, and together they formed the Rose Film Company in 1962. She once collaborated with Chan Po-chu in the classic film 'Black Rose'. Nan Hong also sang theme songs for movies such as 'Bean Flower Spring Heart', 'Blossoms of Love', 'Visceral Affection at the Top of the Wall', 'Plaintive Melody of the Half-Covered Pipa', 'Molly, Dear Molly' for the song 'Foolish Love', 'Walking Dead at the Lighthouse' for 'Returning Home is Like Arrows', 'Pastoral Song' for 'Infinite Romance', 'Seed of Love' for 'Planting Love Flowers by Mistake', 'Maiden Love' for 'Azalea Red', 'Fake Wife' for 'Dancing Practice', 'Passionate Wanderer' for 'Longing for Love in Four Seasons' and many more.
At one point, Nan Hong joined Lida Television, then switched to TVB around 1977, and around 1994 returned to ATV. She mainly portrayed virtuous wives and mothers, such as the role of Tang Shaomei in 'In the Chamber', He Mu in 'Dream of Beijing in Spring', and Chen Caixia in 'Radio People'.
