Ma Yashu, nicknamed Ya Ya, a mainland Chinese actress from Kunming, Yunnan, graduated from the China National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. On December 13, 2006, she registered for marriage with Taiwanese artist Daniel Wu. In July 2009, it was rumored that Daniel Wu and Ma Yashu had relationship issues and got divorced by signing papers. Daniel Wu transferred six properties under his name to Ma Yashu, along with paying nearly 42 million New Taiwan Dollars in alimony. Both of their agents denied the rumor, saying that they were both busy with work and did not want to discuss the relationship rumors. In August 2009, Ma Yashu's agent confirmed that she had divorced Daniel Wu and was cohabiting with a handsome foreign man. In October 2009, the two returned to the Yunnan Civil Affairs Bureau where they originally registered their marriage, and officially signed the divorce papers. It was said that Daniel Wu even transferred his multi-million dollar mansion to Ma Yashu.
