Dong Jie entered the army in Dalian through special recruitment of the Warrior Song and Dance Troupe in 1990, and was later sent to the PLA Art Academy in Beijing for five years of dance training. After graduating, she officially joined the Warrior Song and Dance Troupe as a dance performer at the end of 1995. Dong Jie made her debut on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala with Nicholas Tse in 2000 and was later discovered by Zhang Yimou to become the 'Happy Girl'.
