Zhou Xun, a famous Chinese actress and singer. She graduated from Zhejiang Art School with a major in Social and Cultural Dance. She was discovered by director Xie Tieli due to a photo on a calendar and made her debut on the big screen in 1991 with the film "The Terracotta Warrior". In 1998, she starred in the well-known work "Suzhou River" directed by the sixth generation Chinese director Lou Ye, winning the Best Actress award at the Paris International Film Festival in 2000, her first film award since starting her career in acting. From 1998 to 2000, she appeared in popular TV dramas such as "The Story of Ming Palace", "April Rhapsody", and "Bland Flames Like Rain", receiving wide acclaim from the film and television industry as well as the audience. Around 2000, she was referred to by the media along with Zhang Ziyi, Zhao Wei, and Xu Jinglei as the Four Dan Actresses.
In 2006, Zhou Xun won multiple Best Actress awards for her role in the film "Perhaps Love" at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards. In 2009, she won the Best Actress award at the Mainland China Golden Rooster Awards for her performance in the film "The Equation of Love". With these achievements, Zhou Xun became the only actress in the Chinese film industry to sweep the top film awards in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, including the Golden Horse, Hong Kong Film Award, Golden Rooster, Hundred Flowers, and Asian Film Awards.
Zhou Xun has collaborated with Hong Kong directors multiple times, and in 2001, she made her first full Cantonese-speaking performance in the film "Hollywood Hong Kong" directed by Fruit Chan. Her performances are charismatic and infectious, and her superb acting skills have earned recognition from numerous directors and the Chinese audience, establishing her as an important actress in the Chinese film industry. In 2009, Zhou Xun obtained permanent residency in Hong Kong through the Hong Kong Immigration Talent List.
On April 21, 2008, Zhou Xun was appointed as the first UNDP Goodwill Ambassador from China, dedicated to promoting sustainable environmental development and launching the "OUR PART" environmental awareness campaign. She has advocated for and implemented eco-friendly lifestyle practices such as reusing formal attire, re-wearing clothes at public events, carrying reusable water bottles, reducing driving, offsetting carbon emissions by planting trees, conserving water and electricity. On Earth Day, April 22, 2010, the United Nations awarded Zhou Xun the title of "Earth Advocate" in recognition of her active involvement in advocating for environmental protection and promoting green lifestyles. Zhou Xun was the first person in the global entertainment industry to receive this honor and the second Chinese person among all recipients. During the award ceremony, Zhou Xun expressed her hope that young people would start from their daily lives to inspire and lead those around them towards eco-friendly practices, believing that this will contribute to positive changes in the world. She also donated the prize money from the UN to the Yushu earthquake-stricken area in Qinghai to help the people there rebuild a green habitat.
